This year marks the 1100th anniversary of the death of St. Ludmila, the first historically documented female princess, ruler and saint in Czech history. This personality and historical context, including the position and importance of women in the early Middle Ages with a focus on the period of the early Christianization of Central Europe, is commemorated by an international online conference.

Report of the event

The aim of the conference was to deepen the understanding of the position and importance of women in the early Middle Ages, with a focus on the period of the early Christianization of Central Europe. The conference was inspired by the significant anniversary of the death of Saint Ludmila - the first historically documented woman, ruler and saint in Czech history.

The main organizer of the conference was the St. Ludmila 1100 Years Society and the conference was held in cooperation with Charles University. The event was financially supported by the Ministry of Culture and the Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe, z. s. The partners of the event were the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, the Institute of Archaeology of the CAS, v. v. i., the Institute of Philosophy of the CAS, v. v. i., the Catholic Theological Faculty of Charles University and the Faculty of Arts of Charles University.
